About the Program

The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) invites proposals for the prestigious Prime Minister Professorship (PM Professorship)—a newly launched initiative under the Government of India. This program seeks to harness the expertise of superannuated scientists, retired faculty, and experienced professionals to uplift the research and innovation culture of less endowed state universities.


Program Objective

The PM Professorship aims to:

  • Leverage the contributions of eminent Indian and overseas scientists across fields including science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and social sciences.

  • Strengthen the R&D ecosystem in state universities categorized under the PAIR Program Category A.

  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and world-class research initiatives in emerging institutions.


Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

Applications are invited from:

  • Superannuated or retired faculty from reputed Indian academic or research institutions.

  • Industry professionals or Professors of Practice with a strong track record in innovation.

  • Overseas scientists: NRIs, PIOs, OCIs actively involved in research.

  • Applicants must be actively engaged in research and willing to relocate full-time to a state university selected under the program.

Minimum Age: 55 years
No Upper Age Limit
Note: Applicants must not hold administrative roles or draw salary/fellowship from other sources during tenure.


Responsibilities of PM Professor

  • Mentoring faculty and students for research excellence and innovation.

  • Facilitating collaborative research with reputed institutions and industry.

  • Strengthening infrastructure, knowledge exchange, and helping develop interdisciplinary research labs or centers.

  • Contributing to proposal writing, lab set-up, and project formulation in line with national and institutional goals.


Proposal Submission Guidelines

  • Joint proposal with host university is mandatory.

  • Minimum two departments from the host university must participate.

  • The proposal must:

    • Clearly define the mentor’s role.

    • Include a 5-year projected research plan.

    • Detail mentoring strategy, lab development plans, collaboration efforts, and CSR utilization if applicable.


Evaluation Criteria

  • Mentor’s academic and professional credentials.

  • Quality and impact of research/publications/patents over the last 5 years by host departments.

  • Feasibility and innovativeness of proposed mentorship model.

  • Infrastructure readiness and manpower availability at host institution.

Only one proposal is accepted per university.


Tenure and Review

  • Duration: 5 Years

  • Mid-Term Review: After 3 years by an expert committee


Funding and Support

  • Fellowship: ₹30 Lakh per annum

  • Research Grant: ₹24 Lakh per annum (for consumables, travel, minor equipment, etc.)

  • Overhead: ₹1 Lakh per annum to host university

  • Host Institution: Must provide office, lab, and library facilities

  • Last Date to Apply: 1st September 2025
