About Department of Atomic Energy

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in India was established directly under the Prime Minister’s charge via a Presidential Order on August 3, 1954. This order mandated that all governmental business related to atomic energy and functions specified under the Atomic Energy Act, 1948 (XXIX of 1948), be managed by the DAE. By 1958, significant advancements in the research and development of peaceful atomic energy necessitated the creation of a dedicated organization with comprehensive authority to plan and execute the expansion of the atomic energy program. Consequently, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was instituted by the Government of India through a resolution on March 1, 1958, endowed with full executive and financial powers. The AEC is tasked with formulating the policy framework for the DAE.
