Prior to this, the responsibilities of the Public Service Commission for civil services and posts related to the affairs of the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh were handled by the Union Public Service Commission as per Article 315 of the Constitution of India. It was necessary for the newly formed state to have its own Public Service Commission.
