About Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC)
The origins of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) trace back to the establishment of the Indian Cancer Research Centre (ICRC) in 1952, located in Parel, Mumbai. ICRC was originally formed under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, Government of India. In 1966, the name of ICRC was changed to the Cancer Research Institute (CRI). Subsequently, a significant development occurred in 1966 when CRI was merged with the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH). This merger gave rise to the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), marking a pivotal moment in India’s healthcare landscape as it became the country’s first comprehensive cancer center.
TMC operates as an autonomous institution receiving grant-in-aid from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), which falls under the jurisdiction of the Government of India. The synergy between the Cancer Research Institute and Tata Memorial Hospital within the Tata Memorial Centre has played a vital role in advancing cancer treatment, research, and education in India.
As a testament to its continued progress, the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) emerged from these foundations. ACTREC represents a more specialized facet of the Tata Memorial Centre, focusing on advanced research, treatment, and education related to cancer. This evolution underscores the commitment of the institution to furthering its impact on cancer care, research, and education in the nation.
