About Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India. Its primary mission is to establish and maintain standards for drugs in the country. The IPC plays a vital role in regularly updating the standards for drugs that are commonly used for the treatment of diseases prevalent in the region. It accomplishes this through the publication of official documents known as the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). These documents contain monographs that define the specifications and standards for various drugs.

The main objectives of the IPC include:

  1. Setting and Updating Standards: IPC sets and revises the standards for the identity, purity, and potency of drugs that are essential for healthcare, both for humans and animals. These standards help ensure the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products in India.
  2. Improving Medicinal Quality: IPC’s work focuses on enhancing the quality of medicines by continually adding new monographs and updating existing ones. This ensures that drugs meet the necessary quality criteria and are safe for consumption.
  3. Promoting Rational Use of Generic Medicines: The IPC contributes to the promotion of generic medicines through the publication of the National Formulary of India. This helps healthcare professionals make informed decisions about the appropriate use of medicines, emphasizing the importance of cost-effective generic options.

In summary, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission plays a critical role in regulating and maintaining the quality of drugs in India. By establishing and updating standards for pharmaceuticals and promoting the rational use of generic medicines, it contributes to the overall improvement of healthcare in the country.
