About Pharmacy Council of India

In India, the education and profession of pharmacy up to the graduate level are regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), which is a statutory body established under the provisions of the Pharmacy Act, 1948. The Pharmacy Act, 1948, was enacted on March 4, 1948, with the primary objective of regulating the profession of pharmacy in the country. The preamble of the Act reads as follows: “An Act to regulate the profession of pharmacy.”

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) was officially constituted on August 9, 1949, under Section 3 of the Pharmacy Act. PCI plays a crucial role in ensuring that pharmacy education institutions meet the required standards, curriculum, and infrastructure. It also sets guidelines for the conduct of examinations and the registration of pharmacists.

Under the PCI’s oversight, pharmacy education in India has evolved to cover a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) and Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm) degrees. Graduates of these programs are eligible for registration with the PCI, which is a prerequisite for practicing pharmacy in the country.
